Set Designs for the Perfect Wedding

When you think about your wedding what are first things that spring to mind?  Is it the dress?  The location?  Maybe the vows are the most important part for you.  Weddings are one of the most special, and expensive, days of our lives.  So it is incredibly important we get them right.

Imagine your wedding day is a big stage performance.  You have the stars of the show at centre stage (That should be you and your partner, obviously) and then you the supporting actors (Family, friends and various helpers) from here you have costume design, set design, lighting and backstage.  In fact there is a list so huge that it would take too long to write it all down.  So we won’t.

You need to have a visual in your mind of what you want your guests to experience as well as what you are looking to take from it (other than each) yourselves.  Choosing the right wedding venue should be as much about photographing your wedding as it is about choosing a place which means something to you.  You need to take two visits to your ceremony and reception venue.  Once as the bride and once as the event manager, it would be helpful to bring the photographer with you to work out if your location is going to deliver the right photography for you.  If you want dramatic images, will it work here?

When it comes to your engagement ring, it’s worth choosing your wedding bands at the same time.  This will give both you and your partner the ability to go with a set, it also may save you some money if you are buying more from one supplier or asking a designer to create all three.  Early planning takes a little bit of pressure off, freeing you up to focus on the other details

Food is a huge part of every reception and whilst some people dream of the ultimate buffet, others desire a sit down affair with perfectly positioned centrepieces.  When you choose your reception venue ask the owner to show you a mix of other style weddings to help you get a better understanding of what works and how the space looks.  It can be hard imagining a room full, it can also be shocking if you have a small wedding, just how empty a place can look.  Where possible sample the food that you have requested.  If your reception is being held in a hotel or country club then head out when they aren’t expecting you and see how they turn food out under pressure.

With a thousand things to coordinate you are going to need to set design and stage manage like a professional.  Write lists upon lists and delegate jobs to friends and suppliers.  Try not to be a bridezilla but do be firm about what you want and how you want it.

Then breath.  Don’t forget you are one half of the most important thing about the day!
