Almost everyone in Australia lives in a city – you won’t find many people living rurally in the outback. Getting around the country often involves hopping from city to city. Each of Australia’s cities has its own character and perks. Here are some of the top cities worth visiting when travelling down under in order the entire Aussie experience.

Sydney

There’s something to please everyone in Sydney. Along with its landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, the city has amazing beaches and incredible nightlife. The sprawling city also has attractions such as Taronga Zoo and the Royal Botanic Gardens where you can take a break from the metropolis, not to mention natural wonders like the Blue Mountains located on the outskirts. Getting around can take a while because of how big the city is, but thankfully the public transport system is efficient.

Melbourne

Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia and has a slightly more European feel to it due to it’s older architecture. It’s renowned for its trendy coffee bars and museums, as well as sporting zoos and aquariums. It’s also the food capital of Australia in many regards, sporting lots of trendy restaurants and food markets. In terms of arts and culture, there’s always something going on whether it be a festival or an art exhibition – it may not have the touristy sights of Sydney, but makes up for it in more offbeat experiences.

Adelaide

Unlike other cities in Australia, Adelaide doesn’t have the skyscrapers and fast-paced buzz. It’s more laid back, known for its strange festivals like Adelaide Fringe festival and its natural sights. Craft ale is big in this city and there are lots of breweries and pubs to try one of these local beverages. There are also lots of rustic places to eat true Aussie food here – in some ways it’s like a huge country town.

Brisbane

Brisbane is located midway up the east Australian coast and has a more subtropical climate. It’s a popular retreat for those wanting to experience Australia’s wildlife with attractions such as the Lone Pine Koala sanctuary. That said, there’s still an urban side to Brisbane worth exploring. Cairns

Located in the north of Australia, Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns also has other tropical adventures nearby including the opportunity to see crocodiles and cassowaries. It’s tropical climate meanwhile makes it the perfect place for catching sun and relaxing by the pool.
