Road trips are perhaps one of the most immersive and action packed modes of travel. So it’s not all too surprising that you’re going to have to put a whole lot of planning into them to pull them off. Here are a few steps that you should take before getting behind the wheel and taking to the open road!

Choosing the Right Travel Companion

Perhaps the first thing you should decide on when bringing your plans of a road trip to fruition is who you want to travel with. Sure, travelling alone could be a liberating and exciting venture. But when you’re opting for a road trip, it’s always a good idea to travel with somebody. Why? Well, it spending extended periods of time out on the road alone can be a relatively lonely experience. Having a travel companion provides you with someone to talk to along the way. If they can also drive, you can share driving responsibilities, switching roles as driver and passenger and getting a rest from having to constantly be fully focused behind the wheel.

Deciding Where to Go

Once you’ve chosen a partner, you can start discussing where you want to go. The world is your oyster when it comes to road trips! There are, however, particular destinations that tend to appeal in particular to roadtrippers. Take Route 66 in America as an example. This long stretch of highway passes through numerous major US states, including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois. It’s not all too surprising that it attracts road trip fanatics from the world over!

Making Sure Your Vehicle is Up to Scratch

Having a partner and a destination or route means that you can pretty much book your trip. However, this isn’t the end of your planning process. Road trips are long and can be testing. One thing that you are going to be entirely reliant on throughout the getaway is going to be your vehicle. Its wheels are going to have to carry you almost every step of your journey. So it’s a good idea to make sure it is in good nick before committing it to the trip. Whether you are taking your own vehicle, purchasing a vehicle near the startpoint of your route, or hiring a vehicle, you need to conduct several checks. Make sure that the breaks are in full working order and use a brake bleeding kit to remove any gas from your brake fluid. Ensure that the tyres have the right air pressure. Check that the vehicle’s oil and window wash are topped up before any long stint. These steps will all help to lower your chances of breaking down or experiencing difficulties on the road.

Allocate Rest Stops

No matter how much energy you may have, you’re going to need a fair few rest stops during your trip. These will allow you to relax and recuperate in order to continue your journey. If you believe that you will particularly like a location that intend to stop in, consider arranging an extended stop off. A couple of days will allow you to really get to experience the area. Remember that the journey is just as important as the end destination when it comes to road trips!

These are just a few steps that you will find yourself having to take in your road trip planning process. But sorting them out sooner rather than later will help to relieve pressure and allow you to let your hair down when it comes to the trip itself!
