Best and Worst Movie Character Representations

For major book lovers, actor choices in movies can be a major point of contention. The Harry Potter universe is no exception. Character representations are a hot conversation topic amongst fans and opinions are widely ranging. Wondering what my opinion is on the best and worst character representations in the 8 Harry Potter and 2 Fantastic Beast films?

I had a hard time with this one. As much as I have a comment or two about acting styles and poor script writing, it was so hard for me to pick a ‘worst’. Truthfully the movies were exceptionally cast. Although I think the main characters left a lot to be desired in early films, their age played a huge factor. So I gave them the benefit of the doubt there. But when I take into account the entire cast, who wins the prize?

Best: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape

Snape is one of the best written characters of all time (yeah, I said that). And Alan Rickman provided the BEST portrayal of Severus Snape on screen.  No one snarls quite like Rickman, and looking back it’s that much more heartwarming when you know the final outcome as one of the most fascinating characters. He always held that air of mystery and aura of prickliness through the films, while ultimately also allowing us to love him. It was an incredibly sad day when we lost Alan Rickman. Runner up, Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge.

Worst: Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindewald

This one may be controversial. But I truly believe that in such an iconic series, it’s irresponsible to cast an actor that is so widely known for distinct characters. That doesn’t mean that other actors in the franchise do not have successful parts elsewhere, but Johnny Depp has Edward Scissorhands, Captain Jack Sparrow, and so many more that it’s hard to see him in this new role. Other’s become known for their HP characters; HP characters should not be known for their other roles. Granted, Johnny Depp is always good at what he does, but I can’t get my head past my opinions on this one.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree? Disagree? Have another choice? I’d love the hear it!
