Although July 1st is officially the day in which Canada celebrates its nationhood and celebrates the day in which it became a country 147 years ago , no Canadian is ever more proud of their country than the day we bring home an Olympic gold medal in hockey. I’m not really a massive sports fan, only really during tennis ATP season. But this morning, on the final day of the olympics, I awoke at 6:45am with the rest of this nation is preparation for the Men’s Gold Medal hockey game in Sochi. Already on a gold medal high from back-to-back golds in women’s and mens curling, as well as in women’s hockey, the stakes and the expectations were high. I think a large majority of Canada was already breathing a sigh of relief knowing that we were not going up against the USA, but we also knew that Sweden and the Triple Crown could give us a run for our money. But not quite….and Canada won 3-0. I don’t want to downplay any of the 10 golds, 10 silvers, 5 bronze and 25 medals in total that Canada won throughout the games, but with these 4 golds in the last three days, Canadians are proud to say that “we have won the Olympics”. Doesn’t matter if we won the most medals, or the most golds, but to all Canadians these medals have capped it off and have solidified a win in the hearts of all Canadians. So congratulations Canada – it’s moments like this that I’m so incredibly proud to be a Canadian from the true North strong and free.
