The Unavoidable Summer Sweat – How to Make Your Makeup Last

No matter what you may think, you sweat. Yes, you. The days are getting hotter and that thing you claim is a ‘glow’ is really sweat – ruining your best outfits and melting off your makeup. There is nothing worse than taking off your sunglasses to find a pooled foundation/sweat mix sitting on the bridge of your nose, or to catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and realize, yup those dark bags are back, your concealer is gone. The days are getting shiny my friends.

But, of course, I’m here to help! I’ve switched over to my Summer makeup menu to counteract those sweaty days and prevent the shine, and I’m here to share it with you. Just a few extra things to add to your current routine to make sure your makeup settles and sticks all day long. With long Toronto commuting days, and a 1.7km walk to and from Union Station every day, the hot, sweaty, makeup melting days are in full swing.

First step is PREP: It’s important to make sure your face is prepared for the hotter days. It’s important to make sure your face is clean and moisturized every single morning, as well as exfoliated a few days a week. Proper skincare is the first step to makeup; the step that most people skip. Makeup can hide a lot, but it’s always better to treat your skin with the proper care to ensure the your natural face is healthy and happy. I don’t start a day without a good wash and the Body Shop Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet moisturizer to prep my face.

Next, is PRIME: You need to make sure your makeup has something to stick to. A well primed face is a longer lasting face. It doesn’t matter which primer you use – whichever works best for you. Just ensure it’s a step you don’t skip on the sweaty summer days. I like to stick to oil-free formulas to ensure I don’t add extra shine to my face. I’ve been loving the Rimmel Lasting Finish Skin Perfecting PrimerIt claims to keep your makeup in place for up to 8 hours and it has yet to disappoint.

And finally, you need to SET: Set it all in place to make sure it stays. I like to set in to different ways. First I set with a mattifying powder to reduce any further shine (I’m all about the matte look if you haven’t already figured). For this I stick to the Soap & Glory One Heck of a Blot Powderwhich I use under my eyes, forehead, nose and chin. And finally, I set my whole face with a good spritz of the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Spray and Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray. Just make sure you hold it a ways away from your face while you spray, or else your makeup will drip off before even hitting the hot streets.

And there you have it. You’re reading to shop till you drop, spend a day at the parks, do the tourist scene, walk 1.7km to work without raccoon eyes upon arrival. Once you prep, prime, and set you’ll beat that ‘unavoidable’ summer sweat….Ahem I mean ‘glow’

Empties #5

Boy do I feel accomplished when I’m able to squeeze the last drop out of a product. And once again I have an overflowing pile of garbage that I save in a corner of my room to share with you guys (still…almost two years later Corey can’t understand this). I love reading these posts from other bloggers to see what they liked enough to use up completely, as well as whether or not the products are worth re-purchasing. I’m a sucker for a good empties post. And because of that these are some of my favourite posts to share with you guys. So lets delve into the pile of garbage…..

For the first time in quite awhile I have a few makeup items in the pile. After cracking my Rimmel Stay Matte Powder on my way home from Mexico a few months ago, it was only a short time later that the remaining few crumbs spilled out everywhere and were no longer usable. I absolutely loved this powder and wonder why I purchased a completely different powder to try out rather than replacing this one. It’s definitely one of my favourites. I also finished two liquid eyeliners – the Lancome Artliner as well as the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. I absolutely love the Kat Von D liner and have already, and always will, repurchase. My favourite of all time. The Lacome Artliner was great, but I struggle with the brush – too delicate. I end up with two uneven wobbly lines.

Moving on to the mass of beauty products, I didn’t bother including the regular empty bottle of Catwalk Curl Amplifying Cream that makes an appearance in every empties post, but there were a few new ones. L’Oreal’s Power Rush Moisture Mask for hair was amazing and lasted a long time. Smells great and makes my hair so soft. Definite repurchase. For my face we  have a few Body Shop items including the Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet, my all-time favourite day cream. We also have the Vitamin E Cream Cleanser which I liked, but didn’t love. I prefer lathering face washes. As we all know I ADORE the Vitamin E line from TBS. I also finished up the Aloe Protective Serum, which I will most likely repurchase. I think it’s a great serum for the summer months. And finally, the last face product was my longest running repurchase item: the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel, which I will repurchase the moment I see any sign of the bottom. Ever. Single. Night.

Two last (and random) products. Quo’s Nail Polish Remover Pump has been the best remover i’ve tried in a long time. So easy to use and takes all polish off quick! I’ve already repurchased. A really old YSL Babydoll perfume was finally spritzed to the last drop – it’s about time. And lastly, Degree’s Motionsense Dry Spray anti-perpirant in Fresh Energy. I picked this up to see what I felt about the new ‘dry spray’ fad, and wasn’t quite sold. It took a few days to get the correct balance and how much was required, and on a daily bases I felt like I was breathing in deodorant fumes. Not pleasant. I’ll stick to my wind-up sticks thanks.

What have you used up lately? Have you tried any of these?

Five Favourite Spring Lips

The sun is shining, our chapped dry skin is returning to normal, and we’re ready to embrace some pastels, soft tones, and whites. Can it be?!! Yes…it’s Spring. Canadian’s are always very hesitant to announce the coming of Spring. It may officially be Spring according to the date, but we always know that there is a chance of another snow storm late into the year. This is about the time when we can safely change over to our summer car tires, put the patio furniture out, and wear sandals without the fear that a storm might blow in and ruin our lives.

So with pops of colour and light in my recent wardrobe, I’ve been changing up the lip shades for this glorious new season. Away with the thick lip moisturizers and dark colours and in with the bright and light! These are my top five picks for spring lips, and a few more I’m lusting over (in no particular order)

1. NARS Velvet Lip Pencil in ‘Sex Machine’ – This was one of the first high end beauty products I ever purchased and I got it for my high school graduation (holy smokes….six years ago!). I didn’t use it much after that but I’ve rediscovered and I’m in love. A dusty pink with a slight shimmer, but still finishing smooth and matte.

2. Revlon ColorBust Matte Balm in ‘Elusive’ – if you’ve followed my blog for awhile you’ll know my love of the Revlon Matte Balm lip pencils. The smoothest, softest, easiest matte lips out there. Amazing pigmentation and stay power. I get compliments on them all the time and I have about 6 shades.

3. Lancome Rouge ‘Voile de Rose’ – this is for those fancier ‘lipstick’ kinda days. A day in the office, a nice lunch or brunch. This is probably my number one Spring pick for all occasions.

4. Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in 01 – I think this shade may be slightly too light for me. I have a hard time picking out pinks sometimes. With pale skin, yet dark hair I don’t like too light. I’m lusting over one shade darker here, but for now am loving the feel and gloss of this. It’s about as glossy as I’m every willing to go.

5. Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Lipstick in 104 – I LOVE the Kate Moss Rimmel lipsticks! I can’t get enough of them. But, hands down, this has to be one of my favourite lip colours of all time. It is the perfect ‘me’ shade. A little darker than most on this list, this is my go-to night out in Spring lip. I’m always a fan of the darker lips, but for spring I try to stick to lighter shades….so this is a darker light (if that makes any sense..are you following?)

As I already mentioned I’m lusting over the Clarins Instant Light in 02, but I’m also dying for some of the BITE Watercolour collection (I know I’m not into gloss but have you seen these?!!) I have quite a few more Spring colours I dabble around with, but these 5 are the top of my list and my most used Spring Lip colours. What do you like for spring?
